You were the the distant skyline that ran across
the horizon of my identity. You were not my every
day, but the occasional Crumbs cupcake. An urban
adventure waiting to happen if only we crossed
the Hudson Bridge.

I glanced down the hall at my bedroom door, telling myself I should go to sleep. But my shallow breaths and the vibrating air told me that wouldn’t be possible.
I placed my feet on the ground and stood, turning the TV off. I shook my head at myself as I put on my coat and grabbed my keys and my phone. My shoes were already on. I didn’t know where I was going at this ungodly hour. I just needed to go somewhere.

I let go of the tension in my muscles, letting it drip down my skin like sweat, puddling below me, then getting washed away by a wave of drunken laughter. My mind floats over the water and I lose all sense of time. I only move to bring my glass to my lips and set it down again.
Read MoreWe open our hands and the sticks drop. The sticks look as if they’re floating as they fall straight down and then plunk into the stream below. I squeal and lean out as far as I can to watch mine float underneath the bridge, my sister following suit. When I cannot see my stick anymore I turn and run to the other side of the bridge and lean out in between the wooden rails.
